Things to See and Do

The mortal remains of King Richard III were found during an archaeological excavation in the city centre, in a car park of all places. There are now many different attractions all linked to the Plantagenet king which will tell you about his life and ultimately his death. From the ancient to the modern, the city is home to the National Space Centre. This is one attraction that the children will adore as they will be able to see real life rockets and satellites that have made the journey into space. This is the largest space related attraction in the UK and includes some incredible artefacts and interactive displays which are sure to grab the imaginations of all who visit. Slow down the speed of travel from rocket powered to the power of steam and check out the Great Central Railway. This is the only length of track anywhere in the world where full sized steam locomotives can pass each other as they once did in the golden days of Steam.

Places to Visit

There are a number of great museums in which you can get to grips with the past, from dinosaur to modern day artefacts, plus you can learn more about the city of Leicester and its wonderful heritage. Enjoy a summer afternoon with a picnic in one of the many parks and green spaces in the city, or spend some time on the lakeside watching the wildlife. The Museum of Science and Technology is a popular attraction for visitors, located in the old Abbey Pumping Station it offers lots of hands on activities for adults and children alike. Children will also enjoy Gorse Hill City Farm, a wonderful community farm where they can get to meet the animals. No visit to the city would be complete without a visit to Leicester Cathedral or to the Guild Hall which is located almost next door. The Guild Hall is a wonderfully preserved timber framed building reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in the city. In fact, five separate ghosts have been identified there! Finally, experience life in the 1950’s at the Newarke House Museum and Gardens in the recreated period street that they have there.
